“No change” — Team Bawumia confident of victory ahead of 31 January NPP primaries

The campaign manager of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Fredrick Opare-Ansah, says the mood within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) strongly favours retaining the former flagbearer ahead of the party’s 31 January presidential primaries.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (6 January), Opare-Ansah said Dr. Bawumia’s nationwide campaign has revealed overwhelming enthusiasm among delegates, including in constituencies where internal polling had earlier suggested potential challenges.

According to him, the Bawumia campaign has so far covered 13 of the party’s 16 regions and is on course to complete visits to all constituencies before the election day.

“Wherever we’ve visited, we’ve seen a very high level of enthusiasm. Delegates keep chanting ‘no change,’” he said, likening the atmosphere to the 1998 Sunyani congress where the party resisted changing its candidate.

Opare-Ansah argued that delegates believe the NPP did not lose the 2024 elections because of Dr. Bawumia personally, but rather due to broader challenges faced by the party in government.

He further cited historical precedent to support the campaign’s confidence, noting that political parties in Ghana tend to win national elections when they retain their presidential candidates.

“When parties repeat their candidates, they tend to win. We saw it with Kufuor, Akufo-Addo, Atta Mills, and Mahama,” he said.

While expressing confidence, Opare-Ansah stressed that the campaign is not complacent, explaining that a decisive victory would make post-primary reconciliation easier and project party unity to the wider electorate.
