GNAT to appeal ruling on WASS teacher’s assault case

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has announced its intention to appeal the ruling in the West Africa Senior High School (WASS) teacher assault case, describing the court’s judgment as unsatisfactory and concerning for teacher safety.

The Adentan Circuit Court had fined three individuals GHC4,000 each after they admitted to assaulting a WASS teacher. The court also ordered them to sign a two-year bond of good behaviour, taking into account that the students are preparing for their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and had already spent six weeks in remand.

However, GNAT Chairman for Madina Adenta Abokobi Municipalities, Christian Yaw Adinkra, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the verdict, warning that such outcomes could embolden others to attack teachers. He confirmed that the association is considering an appeal, insisting that the punishment does not reflect the gravity of the offence.

The victim, Nicholas Teye, also voiced disappointment, stating that he initially believed the offenders had been given a custodial sentence when he heard “two years,” only to learn it referred to a bond of good behaviour.

GNAT maintains that pursuing an appeal is necessary to ensure justice is served and to deter future assaults on teachers.
