FACT CHECK: Ashanti Regional Minister’s claim that Akufo-Addo commissioned Sewua Hospital before 2024 election FALSE!

A claim by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the Sewua Hospital before the 2024 general election has been found to be false when compared with official records of the project.

Speaking on Ahenfie TV, a Kumasi-based radio station on Wednesday (27 May), Dr Amoakohene suggested that the commissioning of the facility was done for political purposes ahead of elections and implied that the project had not been fully handed over at the time.

He further referenced alleged remarks attributed to the construction firm Euroget, claiming the company had indicated that the project remained under construction and had not been formally handed over to government.

However, available official records show that the 250-bed Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua was commissioned on 4 January 2025, by then-President Akufo-Addo, after the 2024 election had already taken place.

Details

The commissioning ceremony also included the 50-bed Infectious Disease Centre at the same site in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

Government communications at the time described the facility as fully completed and equipped, forming part of long-running Euroget hospital projects initiated under former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2008.

The hospital is designed with facilities including an outpatient department, intensive care unit, maternity and surgical theatres, laboratory services, pharmacy and other support units.

Traditional leaders and officials present at the commissioning event publicly acknowledged the completion of the project and its expected role in easing pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

While construction projects may sometimes involve final adjustments after commissioning, there is no official evidence supporting the assertion that the Sewua Hospital was commissioned before the 2024 election or that the event was purely political in nature.

Verdict

Based on the timeline of events and available records, the claim that the hospital was commissioned before the 2024 election is false.
