Abandoned Agenda 111 Hospital in Awutu Senya West overrun by reptiles and rodents

The uncompleted Agenda 111 Hospital project at Awutu Senya West in the Central Region has reportedly been abandoned since the 2024 general elections, with residents raising concerns over deteriorating conditions at the site.

Residents say the abandoned facility, located at Awutu “Small London”, has now become a habitat for reptiles, rodents and other wild animals, posing a threat to the surrounding community.

The hospital project, which commenced in 2021 under the government’s Agenda 111 initiative, was designed as a 100-bed district hospital equipped with operating theatres and residential accommodation for doctors and nurses.

According to residents, construction works progressed to about 73 per cent completion before work stalled after the elections.

Awutu Senya West, with a population of over 161,000 people, currently lacks a fully functional district hospital, forcing residents to seek healthcare services in nearby towns including Winneba, Kasoa and Agona Swedru.

Speaking to Adom News, some residents described the abandoned project as a major disappointment and a waste of public funds, especially as access to healthcare remains a major challenge in the constituency.

They appealed to the government to urgently resume construction and complete the facility to improve healthcare delivery and save lives.

Acting Chief of Awutu Small London, Nana Kweku Arhin, also expressed concern about the current state of the site, stating that community members fear going near the area because it has been taken over by dangerous animals, including snakes and other reptiles.

The Asafohene of Awutu Bosom Abena, Daniel Opei, also criticised the abandonment of the project, describing it as worrying considering the healthcare needs of residents in the area.

He noted that many residents are forced to travel long distances before accessing medical care due to the absence of a district hospital in the constituency.
