NACOC raids drug dens in festive season crackdown; 72 suspects arrested

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has carried out a series of intelligence-led raids across parts of the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions, dismantling several drug dens as part of a festive-season operation dubbed “Operation White Ember.”

The coordinated operations targeted known drug hubs in communities including Mamfe and Tutu in the Eastern Region, as well as Madina Redco Flats, Zongo Junction and the railway slums around Airport City in Accra.

According to a recent statement by NACOC, the raids were done with K9 units, aiding the commission’s raids to Tema Community One and Teshie-Nungua, where dozens of suspects were arrested and quantities of illicit drugs seized. Patrols were also conducted at selected malls and beaches across the capital as part of heightened surveillance during the Christmas period.

The statement indicated that substances retrieved during the operations included ecstasy, methamphetamine and cannabis-laced alcoholic drinks, noting that the seizures could prevent widespread harm during the festive season. The Commission described the intervention as one that may have saved “thousands of lives from the brink of addiction” in December.

A total of 72 suspects were rounded up and arrested during the operation. Officers also engaged residents who gathered at several locations, conducting on-the-spot public education on the dangers of drug abuse and its impact on community safety.

NACOC says the raids will continue in the days and months ahead as part of sustained efforts to ensure public safety and protect lives during and beyond the festive season.
