NPP Urges Government to Uphold Democratic Principles and Rule of Law

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the government to strictly adhere to democratic principles and the rule of law in its governance approach.

In a statement, the party emphasised the need for tolerance of differing views and protection of fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and expression. It warned that any deviation from constitutional provisions risks undermining Ghana’s democratic credentials.

The NPP reiterated that Ghana operates under a constitutional democracy where diverse opinions must be accommodated. It urged state institutions, particularly security agencies, to act within the bounds of the law and respect due process in all operations.

General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua stressed that respect for the rule of law and civil liberties forms the bedrock of stable governance. He appealed to the government to recalibrate its posture to foster an environment where criticism contributes to national development rather than being perceived as a threat.

The party further called on the media, civil society organisations, and the general public to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic gains. It reaffirmed its own commitment to constitutional rule and urged all political actors to work towards strengthening Ghana’s multiparty democracy.

Ghana has built a reputation for peaceful power alternations and institutional resilience since the return to constitutional rule in 1992. Maintaining this record requires consistent adherence to principles of accountability, tolerance, and protection of individual rights by whichever party is in power.

The NPP’s appeal comes amid ongoing public discourse on the balance between maintaining public order and preserving civic freedoms. The party expressed confidence that upholding these values will contribute to a more cohesive and progressive society.
