Former President Akufo-Addo denies seeking Mahama’s intervention over Ofori-Atta

The Office of the Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has strongly denied media reports suggesting that the former president is seeking audience with President John Dramani Mahama to secure assurances for the safe return of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a rejoinder dated December 16, 2025, and signed by H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the Office described as “utterly false” a publication by The Herald newspaper, which alleged that the former President was considering approaching President Mahama over concerns relating to Mr. Ofori-Atta.

The statement said the report, which has been widely circulated by other media outlets, was a “total fabrication.”

According to the Office, former President Akufo-Addo has neither contemplated nor made, whether expressly or impliedly, any request or representation to President Mahama or any of his agents regarding Mr. Ofori-Atta.

The statement further emphasized that Nana Akufo-Addo is a firm believer in democratic principles and that his commitment to the rule of law has never been in doubt.

While acknowledging that the fate of Mr. Ofori-Atta is of concern to the former President, given that he is both a cousin and served as Finance Minister throughout Akufo-Addo’s two terms the Office clarified that such concern does not extend to any attempt to interfere with legal processes.

The Office of the Former President has also demanded that media houses which carried the initial publication reproduce the rejoinder in line with the former President’s rights.
