President John Dramani Mahama has secured the firm commitment of contractors working on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project to complete all works by the second quarter of 2026.

This follows his visit to the site to address prolonged delays that have exacerbated traffic woes for thousands of commuters.

The President, who was accompanied by the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, directly confronted the project’s chequered history, demanding not only a swift acceleration of works but also cast-iron guarantees that quality standards would be strictly adhered to, ensuring that the dual carriageway stands the test of time.

The President’s directive comes as a decisive move to get the critical infrastructure project, which serves as a major artery linking Accra to Kumasi and the northern part of the country, firmly back on track this year after it was stalled for four months due to alleged non-payment to the contractors, Maripoma Enterprise Limited.

Inspection

During the inspection on yesterday, President Mahama emphasised the economic and social imperative of the project, which has been a source of immense frustration for motorists and residents alike.

“One of the major problems with road contractors in this country is the quality of material. So you build the road and after a short while it begins to deteriorate.

“Your company is one of the well-known contractors in Ghana and so this could be a mark of the quality of your brand,” the President said.

President Mahama added that, “As government has committed to paying you well, you too must commit to move faster on the road and also use quality materials”.

Assurance

Providing the assurance that the government sought, the Chief Resident Engineer for the project, Kwabena Bimpong, publicly affirmed the new completion timeline.

“I can assure the government and the people of Ghana that construction will be fully completed by the second quarter of 2026,” he said.

The President’s working visit and the subsequent firm assurance are seen as a significant step towards restoring public confidence in the project, which is vital for decongesting traffic and facilitating smoother transportation of goods and services.
