GTEC queries NaCCA deputy director over use of “Dr.” title

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has written to the Acting Deputy Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), J. R. Achoanya Ayam, demanding clarification and documentary proof regarding his use of the academic title “Dr.”

In a letter dated November 4, 2025, and signed by Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdullai, Director-General of GTEC, the Commission expressed concern over the use of academic titles that have not been formally earned or conferred by a recognised institution, warning that such actions violate Ghana’s established academic protocols and standards.

“The use of such titles—particularly when they lack formal academic validation—can be misleading and is inconsistent with the established academic protocols and standards governing the conferment and use of academic ranks in Ghana,” the letter stated.

GTEC has requested Dr. Ayam to provide clarification on his use of the “Dr.” title by submitting details of the awarding institution, copies of the relevant degree certificate, and official academic transcripts for verification.

The Commission further directed that if he is unable to provide the necessary documentation, he must immediately cease using the title “Dr.” in all forms and remove it from official and public platforms, including institutional documents, professional profiles, websites, and letterheads.

GTEC noted that the directive has also been communicated to the Ministry of Education, through its Chief Director, for enforcement. The letter, which supersedes an earlier correspondence dated November 3, 2025, requires full compliance by November 10, 2025.

“The Commission expects your full cooperation on this matter,” the letter added.
