A group of aggrieved members of Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has filed a court application seeking to halt ongoing internal electoral processes in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, escalating tensions ahead of the party’s polling station elections.
The plaintiffs are asking the High Court to issue an interlocutory injunction restraining the party’s Western Regional leadership and constituency executives from continuing with vetting processes and the organisation of polling station elections.
The applicants include Sam Nathaniel Andoh, Samuel Kwaw Blay, Musah Abdulai, Charlotte Ghansah, Francis Ntsiful, Eric Bonney, Juliana Eshun, and Memunatu Abubakar Saddick.
They are seeking to block the NPP in the Western Region, along with regional and constituency officials including Francis Ndede Siah, Western Regional Chairman; Benjamin Assabill, Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency Chairman; Fuseini Amadu, Constituency Secretary; and Anthony Aidoo, Regional Representative, or their agents from proceeding with the process.
In their motion on notice, the applicants stated that they are praying the court to prevent the party officials:
“From vetting or purporting to vet or continue to vet any candidate or aspirant or any person [and]from conducting, or purporting to conduct or holding or purporting to hold New Patriotic Party Polling Station Elections in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency, Western Region, or doing any activity or procedure or process relating to or emanating from the organization of New Patriotic Party Polling Station Elections in the Tarkwa TarkwaNsuaem Constituency Nsuaem Constituency Western Region or Nsuaem Constituency, Western Region.”
The group argues that the ongoing internal processes are flawed and do not adhere to the party’s established guidelines, alleging that they are being manipulated to favour certain individuals.
The court application adds to growing internal disputes within the NPP in the constituency, where disagreements over party organisation and electoral procedures have in the past triggered similar legal challenges.
The NPP leadership in the Western Region has yet to publicly respond to the latest injunction application.
