Wontumi TV has issued a public apology to former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the general public over remarks made by one of its presenters linking the ex-president to a recent military helicopter crash.

In a statement dated August 9, 2025, the station’s management described the claims, made by on-air presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary” to its values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness. Wontumi TV stressed that the comments did not reflect its views, policies, or editorial stance.

“The remarks were made without evidence and do not reflect the views, policies, or editorial position of Wontumi TV. As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the statement read.

Management assured its audience that immediate steps are being taken to address the matter. Disciplinary action will be taken against the presenter, and editorial guidelines have been reinforced to ensure all on-air staff base their commentary on verified facts and credible records.

The station also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the helicopter tragedy and urged unity and sensitivity in discussing issues of national grief.

“Wontumi TV remains committed to upholding the highest standards of journalism and ethical broadcasting. We will continue to provide our viewers with accurate, balanced, and respectful content at all times,” the management added.

The apology comes amid heightened public discourse over the need for responsible journalism, particularly in times of national tragedy, when false or unverified claims can inflame tensions and cause unnecessary distress
