Malawians Vote in High-Stakes Election Amid Deep Economic Crisis

Malawians are casting their ballots today in a decisive presidential election that has drawn 17 candidates, including former president Joyce Banda—the only woman in the race.

The election comes at a time of acute economic distress, marked by soaring inflation of 27%, persistent fuel shortages, and widespread food insecurity that has left millions struggling to cope.

Incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera is seeking a second term but faces mounting criticism over his government’s handling of the economy. Former presidents Peter Mutharika and Joyce Banda are among his strongest challengers as they seek a return to power.

Under Malawi’s electoral rules, a candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the vote to win outright. If no contender crosses that threshold, the country will head to a runoff.
