Junior Doctors to withdraw services from October 7 over unpaid salaries

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has announced a nationwide withdrawal of services, citing months of neglect and unfair treatment by government and health authorities.

In a press release dated October 2, the Association said more than 200 junior doctors have been working for between 10 to 14 months without receiving salaries.

It added that “several medical officers who were previously on payroll have had their salaries stopped without explanation,” while “over 800 medical officers… have been awaiting posting for the past 1 year, 4 months.”

The JDA expressed frustration that despite several engagements with the Ministry of Health and demonstrations of good faith, no concrete solutions have been provided.

The statement directed members to withdraw all outpatient services from Tuesday, October 7 to Thursday, October 9, 2025.

It further ordered that “emergency services [will be withdrawn] effective Friday, 10th October 2025 until further notice.”

However, the doctors said inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but “no new cases will be admitted.”

According to the Association, the strike has become inevitable due to the government’s inaction.

“The continued exploitation of junior doctors will no longer be tolerated,” the statement said, stressing that “the responsibility for any disruption of healthcare services lies squarely with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Ghana.”

The JDA called on stakeholders to act swiftly to resolve the crisis.
