Bizarre!: Seized Truckload Of Suspected Indian Hemp Arrives At Police HQ With Half As Sawdust

A Hyundai 5-ton truck loaded with over 100 sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp has arrived at the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua with nearly half of its contents missing.

The vehicle, with registration number ER 760-23, was intercepted by a police patrol team on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the truck was later driven to the regional command under the instruction of Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankrah.

Service Driver Chief Inspector Daniel Addo delivered the truck on Wednesday, October 1.

However, officers at the command noted that the load had been tampered with. Many sacks had been replaced with sawdust, leaving the consignment partially full compared to what was initially seized.

The Asesewa District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Ackah, had earlier declined to release the truck to the regional operations commander, insisting he would personally escort it. Despite this, a discrepancy was discovered upon arrival in Koforidua.

Meanwhile, the two suspects linked to the case, identified as Sulley Abubakari and Sadat, were absent when the truck reached the command. Reports suggest they escaped custody after being held at the Sekesua Police Station.

In a related twist, three police officers who intercepted the vehicle were detained briefly, handed over to the regional operations commander, and later held at the KTU Police Station before being released following the intervention of the Deputy Minister of Interior, Ebenezer Terlabi Okletey.

The officers have since been asked to provide official statements.

The development has stirred unease within the Eastern Regional Command, with some officers expressing frustration over what they describe as unfair treatment of colleagues who risked their lives in the operation.
