NMC cautions nurses and midwives over unprofessional behaviour on social media

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of Ghana has issued a stern warning to student nurses, midwives, and practitioners to desist from unprofessional behaviour on social media platforms.

In a public notice dated October 6, 2025, the Council expressed deep concern over a growing trend of disturbing videos and social media posts involving trainee nurses, nurse assistants, and midwives that depict conduct deemed grossly unprofessional.

According to the NMC, such acts are a direct violation of the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct governing the nursing and midwifery professions.

The Council highlighted three major areas of concern:

  • Misuse of the nursing and midwifery uniform in creating social media content, particularly those aimed at educating the public or colleagues without authorisation.
  • Use of abusive, derogatory, or offensive language directed at leadership and stakeholders.
  • Dissemination of misleading or unverified health information under the guise of professional advice.

The statement reminded practitioners that nursing and midwifery are professions built on integrity, respect, professionalism, and ethical responsibility. Any conduct that undermines these values, it noted, not only damages the image of the profession but also erodes public trust in the healthcare system.

Reiterating its authority, the NMC emphasised that it is the sole body mandated to accredit institutions and license individuals to practise as nurses and midwives in Ghana. Therefore, no person or group is permitted to provide public education or professional guidance in the Council’s name without official approval.

The Council cautioned all students and practitioners to refrain from such misconduct, warning that disciplinary measures, including suspension or revocation of licences, would be taken against anyone found guilty of breaching the professional Code of Conduct.

The statement concluded with an appeal to all stakeholders to uphold the dignity and sanctity of the nursing and midwifery professions and to report any unprofessional behaviour to the Council for appropriate action.
