Teacher unions demand immediate payment of delayed allowances

Three major teacher unions—GNAT, NAGRAT, and PRETAG—have registered their displeasure over the failure of the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) to pay two key allowances due teachers in November 2025.

In a joint statement dated November 26, 2025, the unions said they were shocked by a press release from the CAGD announcing its inability to honour payments of the Continuous Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) and the Critical Support Allowance (CDISA), despite a 2024 Collective Agreement which stipulated that the allowances be paid this month.

They insist the delay breaches the agreement and places an undue financial burden on teachers, and are calling on the Minister of Education to urgently intervene to ensure the immediate release of the outstanding allowances.

The unions further expressed disappointment in the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Ghana Education Service, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the CAGD, accusing them of systemic lapses that continue to undermine the welfare of workers.
