Nana Akomea dismisses claims blaming Bawumia for NPP’s 2024 defeat

Nana Akomea, Chairman of the Communications Directorate for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, has dismissed claims by Bryan Acheampong that Dr Bawumia’s candidature was the primary cause of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview, Nana Akomea described Mr Acheampong’s assertion as mere personal conjecture, arguing that it is not supported by any credible research or empirical evidence.

Explaining his position to host Kwame Sefa Kayi, Nana Akomea cited findings from several pre-election research reports conducted in 2024, including those by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Afrobarometer, and Global Info Analytics. According to him, all the surveys projected an NPP loss largely due to prevailing economic conditions and “bread-and-butter” issues affecting the electorate.

He further referenced post-election studies carried out in 2025, such as the Prof Mike Oquaye Committee report and research by Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which similarly identified economic challenges and public disaffection with the government as the key factors behind the party’s defeat.

Nana Akomea stressed that none of these major research findings cited Dr Bawumia’s candidature as a reason for the NPP’s electoral loss, and challenged Mr Acheampong to point to any credible survey that supports his claim.

He concluded by noting that recent surveys ahead of the upcoming NPP primaries, including those by Global Info Analytics and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, indicate growing popularity for Dr Bawumia among party delegates, a development he said further undermines the claim that Dr Bawumia was responsible for the party’s 2024 defeat.
