NPP Youth Wing rates President Mahama’s first year a “betrayal,” highlights joblessness and broken promises

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has delivered a scathing assessment of President John Dramani Mahama’s first year in office, describing his tenure as a “betrayal” and a “scam” against Ghanaian youth.

In a press statement released on 12 January 2026, and signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, the group gave the President a performance score of just 4 out of 10. While acknowledging some macroeconomic stability and improvements in inflation, the Youth Wing argued that these figures have not translated into tangible relief for the average citizen, as the cost of living remains high.

Employment Crisis Described as a “Ticking Time Bomb”

The NPP Youth Wing singled out the government’s failure to address youth unemployment as a critical concern. The statement criticised the unfulfilled “1-3-3” job formula, which promised one job for three shifts and three people, leaving trained nurses and teachers without employment.

“This jobs matter goes beyond winning elections; it is a real ticking time bomb,” the statement read, citing the recent stampede at El-Wak Stadium, where young people crowded to enlist in the Ghana Armed Forces, as evidence of widespread desperation.

Allegations of Extravagance and Policy Failures

The statement also targeted what it described as misplaced government spending, highlighting a reported $60 million allocation for a new presidential jet while essential professional clearances for healthcare workers and educators remain unfunded.

Other grievances raised by the NPP Youth Wing include:

The alleged sacking of over 13,000 young employees since the current administration took office.

Failures in the No-Fee-Stress tertiary education policy.

Abandonment of the campaign promise to train one million coders.

A 2026 national budget that “offers nothing to benefit young people.”

Political and Judicial Concerns

Beyond economic issues, the Youth Wing accused the Mahama administration of undermining democratic institutions, alleging political persecution and “strangulation of the judiciary,” claiming the judicial system has been “buried six feet deep” under the current leadership.

The statement concluded, “Your word must be your bond,” highlighting a youth population it says is “withering in hope” amid what it described as a “cold, icy road” for Ghana’s young people.
