Ghana’s job crisis forcing graduates into low-level roles – Labour Expert

Executive Director of the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), Peter Bismark Kwofie has said the growing unemployment crisis in Ghana has pushed many people to accept jobs far below their qualifications just to make ends meet.

As a result, several highly educated individuals now find themselves in roles that do not reflect their training or expertise.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Kwofie noted while it is not wrong for companies to hire overqualified candidates, such arrangements should be made with full consent from the individual involved.

According to him, “It is acceptable for an organisation to employ someone who is overqualified if the person willingly takes the job despite their higher qualifications.”

However, he cautioned that employing individuals who lack the required skills or qualifications for a role is unprofessional and undermines workplace efficiency.

Mr Kwofie also warned that repeatedly accepting lower-level jobs can harm a person’s long-term career growth.

He explained that working consistently below one’s capacity may cause professionals to lose touch with their core competencies and miss out on opportunities to gain relevant experience aligned with their qualifications.

He urged job seekers to weigh both the short-term financial relief and the long-term impact on their career trajectory before settling for roles below their skill level.
