The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South in the Eastern Region, Michael Okyere Baafi, has revealed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo gave him the chance to choose where he wanted to serve shortly after the 2016 electoral victory.
“He gave me a blank check; this is the first time I am saying this. He gave me a blank check that I should look for where I want, and I mentioned it, and he gave it to me,” he said in an interview on JoyPrime on Wednesday.
The former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry also disclosed that he was the first CEO Akufo-Addo appointed upon winning power.
“I think I was the first CEO appointed in Nana Akufo-Addo’s government. I was given my appointment letter on 25 January; other ministers were not given their appointment letters,” he added.
He explained that the former President granted him such an opportunity because of the close working relationship they had built over the years.
“I have worked for him like everybody working for him, so we believe in him; he has been our father for a very long time, myself and Honourable Annoh Dompreh,” he recalled.
Mr Okyere Baafi expressed gratitude for the trust and confidence the former President reposed in him, describing it as a rare gesture that reflected Akufo-Addo’s appreciation for loyalty and dedication.
Akufo-Addo appointed Mr Michael Okyere Baafi as Executive Secretary of the Ghana Free Zones Authority in 2017 and, in 2021, appointed him as Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry.
