Bawumia: NPP Lost 2024 Election Due to Voter Apathy, Not NDC’s Strength

The 2024 Presidential Candidate for the NPP, who is running for the Flagbearership position to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to low voter turnout among its supporters rather than the strength of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during the launch of his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15, Dr. Bawumia pointed to voter data showing a significant drop in NPP turnout. According to him, the party lost over two million votes compared to its 2020 performance, while the NDC won with a margin of 1.7 million votes.

“About 2.1 million people who voted for us in 2020 did not vote in 2024. These were our own members we simply didn’t turn out,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that had these NPP supporters gone to the polls, the election outcome could have been different.

“John Mahama won with 1.7 million votes, but we lost 2.1 million of our own votes. If those members had voted, we would have won. That’s why I say it wasn’t the NDC that won it was the NPP that lost,” he stressed.

Looking ahead to the 2028 elections, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in the NPP’s chances, underscoring the importance of party unity and strong voter mobilization efforts.
