Appointments Committee has been politicised – Baffour Awuah

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has expressed concern over what he describes as excessive political interference in the work of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, the MP said the committee has gradually been “destroyed with politics,” leading to declining public confidence in the vetting process.

According to him, the highly partisan stance adopted by members—particularly from the Majority and Minority sides—has compromised the objectivity and integrity of the committee’s work.

He noted that with the NDC currently holding the Majority in Parliament, they appear unwilling to consider the views of the Minority NPP during vettings, a development he described as unhealthy for Ghana’s governance.

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah called for reforms to restore confidence in the Appointments Committee, urging lawmakers to prioritise national interest over political interest.

“Even Ghanaians have realized that what is happening is not good. The public’s perception of the vetting process is low. If we, as legislators, want to improve confidence in the process, we need to change our approach. We have taken a partisan position; the NDC is the majority and has made up its mind not to listen to the minority NPP.

“However, they are forgetting that once an individual is approved, he or she becomes a government appointee and not just a party representative. We really need to work on the Appointments Committee and ensure that it is not politicised. If the person is not properly vetted and is potentially corrupt, that won’t help Ghanaians. The Appointments Committee has become politicised, which means we are not vetting the right people into governance,” he said.
