Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of six young women during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

In a message posted on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia described the incident as heartbreaking and extended condolences to the affected families.

“My condolences go out to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives today at the El-Wak Stadium. May the injured recover quickly, and the souls of our departed ladies rest in peace,” he wrote.

The tragedy unfolded when thousands of applicants converged on the stadium for the GAF recruitment process. Happyghana.com’s Prince Antwi Boasiako reported intense overcrowding and heavy pushing at the entry points, which triggered chaos and resulted in multiple injuries.

The Ghana Armed Forces later confirmed that six female applicants had died, with several others sustaining varying degrees of injury. Many of the injured are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, where some remain in critical condition.

In response, GAF has suspended the recruitment exercise and pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the cause of the stampede and preventing similar incidents in the future.

The disaster has sparked nationwide grief and renewed concerns about crowd management, safety protocols, and emergency preparedness during large-scale public recruitment exercises.
