Consumers lose over GHȼ600K to online shopping scams in 2025

Ghana recorded more than GHȼ600,000 losses from 266 cases of online shopping fraud between January and October 2025, underscoring rising cyber-risks as consumer activity intensifies ahead of the Black Friday shopping surge.

This is according to data from the Cyber Security Authority issued on Friday, November 28, which says the spike in fraudulent activity highlights a growing trend of brand impersonation, fake online shops and phishing schemes targeting digital buyers.

Scammers are increasingly exploiting search engine results, social media storefronts and cloned websites to lure victims into making advance payments or divulging sensitive financial information.

The uptick comes at a time when e-commerce continues to expand, drawing more shoppers online and creating fresh vulnerabilities for both consumers and businesses.

The Authority is urging heightened vigilance as retailers roll out aggressive discount campaigns, warning that the season presents a prime window for cybercriminals to exploit weak verification practices.

The regulator maintains that stronger due diligence checks by buyers, along with adherence to safer payment practices, will be crucial in reducing financial exposure as end-of-year online transactions peak.
