Gary Nimako Marfo (Esq), head of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Legal Directorate, has outlined a reconciliatory approach for the party ahead of the 2028 elections, citing lessons from the 2024 polls.
Speaking in an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (27 February), Nimarko said the party’s strategy must begin with humility and credibility, stressing the need to acknowledge past mistakes and restore public trust.
“The quantum of votes that we lost in the [2024] election was monumental. I think we should accept our mistakes, and we are willing to make amends if Ghanaians give their mandate back to us,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of communication and public posture, pointing to the leadership style of the party’s head, who he described as “consistent, calm and with a listening ear,” adding that all party members must align to build confidence among citizens.
Eroded public support
Nimako said external factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, had affected governance and eroded public support for the NPP, despite interventions such as free water and electricity during lockdowns.
He also touched on recent economic developments, including government subsidies and currency interventions, noting the importance of stable policies and accountability.
“Some of the things that the NPP did were not bad…external shocks played a crucial role in diminishing our fortunes, and our friends in the [NDC] capitalised on this,” he said.
“For me, let us all realise that this is politics and governance. We don’t want NDC to fail; they must succeed so we build upon it. If they fail and they take us back, it means we are going to a hard job,” Nimako said.
