It’s an insult to those who sacrificed for this party – KT Hammond blasts ‘rich men’ braggarts in NPP race

Former Minister of Trade and long-serving Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, KT Hammond, has lashed out at New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants who boast about their wealth and exaggerate their financial contributions to the party.

Speaking to party faithful on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in Adansi Asokwa during former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s tour of the Ashanti Region, KT Hammond described such aspirants as “latter-day braggarts” and questioned their whereabouts during the formative years of the NPP in the 1990s, when committed members sacrificed their resources to sustain the party.

He argued that such aspirants, who now flaunt their riches and insult fellow party members, lack the moral standing to lead the NPP. According to him, the majority of the party’s grassroots—who are not wealthy—stand firmly behind Dr Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

“If they want to turn this party into the rich versus the poor, then we want to tell them that we the poor, who are in the majority, are for Dr Bawumia,” KT Hammond declared.

“When we needed money to build the party, where were all these people who are now bragging and insulting us with their money? In the 1990s, when the party was so broke before the 2000 elections, where were they?”

Recalling the struggles of the NPP in its early days, he stressed that it took the toil and sacrifice of many stalwarts to build the party into a formidable force capable of winning power.

“Many of our stalwarts dedicated their lives and resources to make the NPP formidable and victorious, enabling us to form government. Where were all these braggarts?” he asked.

“All these noisemakers bragging today that they have money and have contributed more than anyone to the NPP were nowhere to be found when others were making sacrifices to keep the party alive.”

KT Hammond insisted that those who truly sacrificed do not boast about it. He accused some wealthy aspirants of disrespecting grassroots supporters after making money in government.

“Today, thanks to those sacrifices, some people have made enough money in government, and all they do is insult and disrespect those of us in the party who are poor,” he lamented.

“Yes, we admit we are poor. But we, the majority who are not rich, will support Dr Bawumia because he has what it takes to lead this party to victory. He may not be as wealthy as those bragging, but he has the qualities to lead the NPP—and that is clear for all to see.”
