Argentine international midfielder Lionel Messi has made history by becoming the male footballer with the most assists in history.
The former FC Barcelona player registered an assist in Inter Miami’s 5-1 win over New York City FC in the MLS (Major League Soccer) Eastern Conference Final.
The win qualified Inter Miami to the MLS Cup Final on December 6 against Vancouver Whitecaps.
Messi’s pass to Matteo Savetti that had the latter finish with aplomb in the 67th minute took the mercurial Argentine’s assist tally to 405.
The mark inches him past Ferenc Puskas who registered 404 assists in his career to rank second on the list with Pele ranking third with 369 assists.
Messi’s mark include the three assists he registered at the 2022 FIFA World Cup that had Argentina win the World Cup trophy for the second time.
The 38 year old who will be 39 midway through next year’s World Cup, has also scored 896 goals in 1136 games.
Messi gets the chance to add to his impressive tally and trophy collection in the MLS Cup Final next month.
