KOFORIDUA, EASTERN REGION – The Eastern Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Philomina Obenewaa Sata, has sounded the alarm over the rising abuse of opioids particularly a dangerous substance known as “Red” among young people in the region.
Speaking to the media, Commander Sata described the situation as deeply troubling, warning that the widespread use of opioids like “Red,” tramadol, and cannabis is posing a serious threat to public health and the future of Ghana’s youth. She noted that videos circulating on social media vividly show the harmful effects of these drugs, with many young users seen in distressed and disoriented states.
To combat the crisis, NACOC is intensifying both enforcement and education efforts. The Commission has been actively involved in community outreach, organizing forums and training sessions aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Sata emphasized the importance of public cooperation, urging residents to report suspicious activities and assist in dismantling drug trafficking networks.
She also called on parents to play a more active role in monitoring their children’s behavior, stressing that unchecked exposure to drugs can derail a young person’s development and have long-term consequences for families and society at large.
