- Kwesi Kwarteng, a spokesperson for the Kennedy Agyapong Campaign Team, says former President Nana Akufo-Addo is no longer backing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.
- Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, January 3, Mr. Kwarteng argued that the withdrawal of Akufo-Addo’s influence from the race has significantly altered the internal dynamics of the NPP.
- He contended that during the 2023 contest, Dr. Bawumia benefited from strong establishment support led by the then President, Akufo-Addo, which, according to him, gave former Vice President Bawumia a clear advantage.
- However, he maintained that such support is no longer in place, insisting that President Akufo-Addo has “jumped off the boat,” leaving Dr. Bawumia without the same level of institutional backing ahead of the 2026 primary.
- “President Akufo-Addo who was the captain of the boat, has jettisoned the boat. Dr. Bawumia is the only person now in it. For now, I can’t tell you which boat he has jumped on to,” he said
- He acknowledged that Dr. Bawumia may still retain some advantage as a former flagbearer but dismissed claims that he remains the most marketable candidate within the party.
