ACCRA — The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has escalated internal disciplinary proceedings by referring multiple petitions against its Deputy Director of Communications, Ernest Owusu Bempah, to the party’s National Council for review, signaling deepening rifts within the ranks as the group grapples with post-election cohesion. In a statement issued Tuesday by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP confirmed the move, emphasizing its dedication to upholding discipline and transparency amid concerns over Bempah’s conduct.
The petitions, submitted by various party members, demand Bempah’s removal from his role, citing behavior that has sparked “grave concern” among colleagues. Bempah’s appointment stemmed from a recommendation by the National Executive Committee and subsequent endorsement by the National Council, the party’s top decision-making body between national congresses. “The party has therefore decided to refer the matter back to the Council,” Frimpong stated, underscoring the process’s fairness. “The NPP reaffirms its commitment to discipline, safeguarding its values, and ensuring that all matters are handled with fairness and transparency.”
Details of the specific allegations remain undisclosed, with neither the party nor Bempah offering public clarification. Bempah, a vocal NPP communicator known for sharp critiques of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has faced prior scrutiny: In April 2025, he was referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for breaching a media gag order through social media posts that risked internal disaffection. By June, alongside Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye, he received a final warning from party leadership over indiscipline, following petitions to the National Executive Council. Critics, including a group of Bawumia supporters in April, accused him of tarnishing former flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia’s image by labeling him a “bad candidate” responsible for the 2024 defeat.
