Paul Afoko announces comeback bid for NPP chairmanship

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Afoko, has announced his intention to contest for the party’s top position once again, calling for renewed leadership that reflects the NPP’s founding principles and unity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Accra, Mr Afoko said his decision followed months of reflection and encouragement from party members and supporters across the country. He described his comeback as a response to calls for leadership that can rebuild trust and reenergise the party.

“This decision has not been taken lightly,” he said. “It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our party.”

Mr Afoko, who was suspended as National Chairman in 2015 after internal disputes, said his focus is on uniting the NPP and preparing it to deliver on its promises to Ghanaians.

“My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future, one where our party stands reenergised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people,” he said.

He plans to meet with party delegates, supporters, and the media in the coming weeks to outline his vision for leading the NPP with “integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose.”

Mr Afoko’s declaration comes months after he criticised the party’s recent decision to attach conditions to its general amnesty for suspended members. Speaking on Okay FM, he argued that reconciliation should not be conditional.

“If you want everybody to come together you don’t give conditions. It should be unconditional,” he said.

The NPP last week lifted suspensions and halted ongoing disciplinary cases as part of a general amnesty. However, members who had forfeited their membership were asked to apply for reinstatement and would remain ineligible to contest internal elections for two years.

The directive, signed by Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, is part of efforts to strengthen party unity ahead of the 2028 elections.

Mr Afoko’s renewed bid adds a fresh dynamic to the party’s internal politics as it seeks to reposition itself after years of internal divisions.

“Let us look ahead together,” he concluded. “God bless the NPP, and God bless our dear country.”
