SHSs pull out of 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz over lack of funds

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has announced that Senior High Schools across the country will not be able to participate in the 2025 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) due to financial constraints.

In a letter addressed to the Managing Director of Primetime Limited, organisers of the NSMQ, available to Metrotvonline.com CHASS explained that schools currently lack the necessary funds to prepare and mobilise students for the competition.

“Schools will not be able to participate in the ballotting and subsequently, the Quiz competition due to non-availability of funds to schools to mobilise and organise their students to take part,” the letter signed by the National Secretary, Baro Primus, stated.

CHASS, however, assured organisers that the decision could be reversed if funds are released by the government in time.

“We want to assure the organisers that, as soon as government releases funds for that purpose, CHASS will review its position and communicate to you accordingly,” the statement added.

The association expressed regret over the inconvenience the development may cause and extended its appreciation to Primetime for its understanding.

The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is Ghana’s longest-running academic competition, established in 1993 to promote the study of science and mathematics among Senior High School students.

Organised by Primetime Limited and sponsored by the Ghana Education Service, the NSMQ brings together some of the brightest students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced contest of intellect, speed, and precision.

Over the years, the competition has become one of Ghana’s most-watched educational programmes, renowned for its academic rigour and fierce rivalries among schools such as Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon), Prempeh College, St. Peter’s SHS, and Opoku Ware School.

The withdrawal of schools from the 2025 edition, if unresolved, could mark a major disruption to the highly anticipated event, which has been instrumental in inspiring scientific curiosity and academic excellence among Ghanaian youth for more than three decades.

The Ghana Education Service did not immediately return to Metro TV’s request for comments.
