NPP race: Ken Agyapong says vetting showed he is “ready” for presidency

ACCRA – New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong said on Tuesday he was confident of winning the party’s presidential primary to lead it into Ghana’s 2028 general elections.

Speaking to reporters after his vetting, the former Assin Central lawmaker said the process was cordial and focused on his vision and motivation to lead.

Smooth exercise

“I was prepared. I believe I answered all the questions, and they know I’m ready to be president of this country,” Agyapong said.

He added that the vetting committee posed “tangible and reasonable questions” rather than antagonising him. “They really wanted to know why I want to be president and my vision for the country. So, I enumerated a couple of points on how I’m going to address some problems,” he said.

Commitment

Agyapong, a longtime party member and businessman, reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing an “Asian model” of economic growth if elected.

He cited South Korea, India and Dubai as examples of how governments could support entrepreneurs with loans, raw materials and equipment to build global brands such as Hyundai and Samsung.

“Now, what they do is that the government partners with the individual, the private sector. So they will wean themselves off when you finish paying the loan. Then it becomes your business,” he said.

“In business, the most difficult part is the capital. So, if the government supports you to get the capital and you run it well, you become a millionaire,” Agyapong added.
