Former Minister of Communications and former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.
She made the announcement on Monday, October 20, 2025, via a heartfelt Facebook post coinciding with her birthday, using the occasion to reflect on the internal challenges facing the NPP and to call for party unity and renewal.
In her post, Owusu-Ekuful acknowledged the recent turbulence within the party but expressed optimism about the future.
“We came out bruised, our individual and collective egos battered. We lie not in a good place,” she wrote. “However, as our great tradition has demonstrated over the years, we will thrive… and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready.”
The former MP emphasized the need for grassroots reorganization, party healing, and restoring public confidence in the NPP, positioning herself as the leader capable of steering that transformation.
“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you, the fighter you have always known… to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary.”
Owusu-Ekuful criticized the current NDC government, describing it as “clueless” and “incompetent,” and blamed its rise to power on unfulfilled promises that led to public disillusionment with the NPP. She stressed the need for internal unity to recapture the support of the Ghanaian electorate.
“This caretaker NDC government is there not because they are preferred, but because they lied their way into government… But we will revive the belief in our party,” she stated.
