UEFA has confirmed that the 2026 Finalissima match between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled, citing political tensions in the region and scheduling disagreements between the teams.
Originally scheduled for 27 March 2026 in Qatar, the match was set to feature UEFA EURO 2024 winners Spain against CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 champions Argentina. UEFA stated that despite multiple proposals, including moving the game to Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu with a 50:50 split of supporters, or staging it over two legs, no agreement could be reached.
The statement read: “It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar… Ultimately, UEFA sought a neutral venue in Europe or alternative dates, but these proposals were rejected.”
UEFA expressed gratitude to the Qatari organising authorities and reaffirmed confidence in the country’s ability to host world-class events, while also hoping for peace in the region.
With Argentina insisting on a new date after the World Cup and Spain unable to accommodate it, UEFA concluded that no feasible solution was possible, leading to the cancellation of this edition of the Finalissima.
