I don’t expect President Mahama to say anything – Hawa Koomson on assault

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says she does not expect any comment or concern from President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman following the violent attack on her during the rerun of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.

The incident occurred at the St Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor on July 11, 2025.

According to reports and video footage, a group of unidentified men stormed the venue and violently disrupted the election process.

During the chaos, Hawa Koomson was physically assaulted. In a video that circulated online, she was seen being pushed to the ground and reportedly stomped in the chest and groin area before police officers intervened.

Speaking to the media at the New Patriotic Party’s National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium on July 19, 2025, Hawa Koomson said she is recovering well with support from her medical team but felt compelled to attend the event to show her supporters that she is getting better.

“So far, by God’s grace, I’m doing very well. The doctors are still attending to me, but I needed to come here for my supporters, my party members, and for the whole world to see that I’m doing better,” she said.

Hawa Koomson added that she does not expect President Mahama or Vice President Opoku-Agyeman, both members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to comment on the incident.

She said their silence is unsurprising since she is not a member of their party.

“I don’t expect the President or the Vice President to say anything because I’m not part of their party, and they are aware of what has happened. So, if they don’t come out, I won’t say anything. I just expect that, as a woman being beaten by these men, and up to now nobody has called to say anything, I leave it to God. I only thank God that I am still strong and alive,” she stated.
