The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has congratulated former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on what it described as a decisive victory in the party’s presidential primary held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Dr. Bawumia was officially declared the winner by the Electoral Commission of Ghana after polling 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast, securing the NPP’s flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections. His closest rival, former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, finished second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent.

In a statement issued on January 31 and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP formally endorsed the results and pledged its full support to the newly elected flagbearer.

“The Party congratulates Dr. Bawumia on his emphatic victory and wishes him well as he leads the NPP into the 2028 General Elections,” the statement noted.

The party also applauded all five aspirants—Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong—for their dedication to democratic ideals and the maturity demonstrated throughout the contest.

Additionally, the NPP expressed gratitude to the Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Joseph Osei Owusu, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, the Ghana Police Service, the media, and party delegates for their roles in ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free election.
As the party turns its focus to the 2028 general elections, it emphasised the importance of unity and collective action, calling on members and supporters to rally behind Dr. Bawumia.

“With the contest concluded, the NPP urges all members and supporters to unite, reconcile, and rally behind our elected flagbearer in the supreme interest of the Party. United in purpose, the NPP will work tirelessly to secure victory in the next general elections. The elephant is the winning symbol, and by the grace of God, we shall prevail,” the statement concluded.
