Transport operators in Accra have embarked on an indefinite strike today, Tuesday, September 16, 2025, to protest what they describe as the unlawful encroachment of the Accra-CMB Lorry Park by private developers.
The action, led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Concerned Drivers Association, Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association, has disrupted commercial transport services across the capital.
According to the unions, the takeover of portions of the lorry park has displaced drivers and traders, pushing operations into unauthorized areas and worsening traffic congestion in the Central Business District.
Addressing the press, GPRTU Deputy National PRO, Samuel Amoah, said drivers were losing their livelihoods.
“Most of the portion has been taken away from us. We tried to manage the little that is left, yet another businessman has come up to take the remaining from us,” he lamented.
He further cautioned that the situation posed serious health and safety risks for commuters and traders.
“Here we are, the lorry park is completely getting out of hand. We are pleading with the government to please save us from the situation in which we are now,” Mr. Amoah added.
The striking unions are expected to present a petition to President John Mahama today, demanding immediate government intervention to reclaim the lorry park and restore order.
