Host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has said the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is lucky to have Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as Flagbearer at this stage of its political journey, calling him well-suited to reorganise and unify the party.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, February 14, Mr. Adom-Otchere noted that opposition parties often find it easier to unite than ruling parties, largely because the shared goal of returning to power tends to suppress internal rivalries.
“If you study a little bit of the political history of this country, the opposition parties uniting is not as difficult as ruling parties uniting. In opposition, people sort of have their eyes cleared. Their desire is simply to win power, and that desire usually takes over people’s personal ambitions,” he said.
He added that while personal scores and ambitions do not disappear, they are often subdued until political power is regained.
Mr. Adom-Otchere argued that Dr. Bawumia’s temperament and political style enhance internal reconciliation. Even during the tense 2023 and 2024 campaign periods, Dr. Bawumia’s efforts attracted support across different factions within the party.
He cited examples such as Richard Anane, who previously opposed Nana Akufo-Addo but openly supported Dr. Bawumia, and noted that cross-factional support stretches back to the era of John Kufuor, demonstrating the vice president’s unifying appeal.
“So the NPP is lucky to have a person at this time who is able to quickly reorganise that,” he concluded.
