Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on government to strengthen intelligence collaboration with neighbouring countries following the killing of seven Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso.
In a statement posted on social media on Monday, February 16, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said he received the news “with shock”, describing the attack as a painful loss to the nation.
“I’ve received with shock news of some Ghanaian traders who have been killed, as well as several others injured in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso,” he said.
He added that the NPP, his wife Samira, and himself extend their sympathies to the affected families.
“The NPP, Samira, and I express our condolences to the families of the bereaved and our best wishes to the injured,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that Ghanaian traders should not be exposed to danger while pursuing their livelihoods outside the country.
“Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade,” he noted.
Dr. Bawumia therefore, urged authorities to work more closely with neighbouring states to improve security and protect citizens abroad.
“I urge the government to deepen intelligence collaboration with all our neighbors to ensure Ghanaians are protected wherever they find themselves,” he said.
The NPP flagbearer also called for stronger action against terrorism and violent extremism.
“Our well established framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism should be strengthened,” he added.
