“President’s Probe of Sole-Sourcing is a Direct Indictment on Roads Minister” – Kofi Tonto

National Communications Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Tonto, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to investigate allegations of extensive sole-sourcing in road contracts as a clear indictment on the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza.

Tonto made the remarks while reacting to the President’s directive for the Roads Minister to respond to claims of irregularities in the “Big Push” road infrastructure programme. The exposé had raised concerns over heavy reliance on sole-sourcing and possible cost inflation in the contracts.

“It’s an indictment on Kwame Agbodza,” Tonto stated bluntly.

He dismissed the idea that the President’s call for investigation demonstrated responsiveness, arguing instead that it exposed weakness and poor oversight within the ministry. Tonto questioned why further probes were necessary when the Roads Minister had already appeared before Parliament and provided detailed explanations on the contracts.

The outspoken NPP communicator maintained that the move to investigate reflects badly on the minister’s handling of procurement processes, especially after the NDC had heavily criticised sole-sourcing during its time in opposition.

This latest development forms part of ongoing public debate surrounding the government’s road projects under the Big Push initiative, with critics accusing the ministry of bypassing competitive bidding in favour of sole-sourced awards.
