The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has directed all importers, manufacturers, and distributors of mixed drinks containing alcohol and stimulants to withdraw such products from the Ghanaian market by the end of March 2026.

In a public notice titled “Regulatory Notice on Mixed Drinks Containing the Combiner of Alcohol and Stimulants,” the Authority warned that the consumption of such products poses serious health and social risks.

According to the notice, the combination of alcohol and stimulants exposes consumers “to serious health risks and adverse psychosocial behaviours,” particularly among “the youth, young adults, and unsuspecting consumers.”

This directive follows an extensive review by the Food and Drugs Authority’s technical experts.

“Findings from the review were supported by the FDA’s Food Expert Committee, specifically the Technical Advisory Committee on Food Safety and Nutrition,” the statement said.

Based on these findings, the Authority has instructed all affected businesses to remove the products from circulation within the stipulated period.

“Consequently, the FDA has directed all importers, manufacturers, and distributors of mixed drinks containing both alcohol and stimulants to clear such products from the Ghanaian market by the end of March 2026 without sanctions,” the notice added.

However, the FDA cautioned that failure to comply after the deadline will attract punitive measures.

“Beyond this deadline, non-compliant products will attract regulatory sanctions, including withdrawal from the…” the statement indicated.

Although the notice did not complete the list of sanctions, it suggested that enforcement actions will be taken against defaulting companies.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to public health and safety, urging industry players and consumers to cooperate fully with the directive.
