The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with Otto Addo as head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars, with immediate effect.
In a brief official statement released early Tuesday, the GFA thanked Addo for his contributions and wished him success in future endeavours. “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the statement read. “The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
The GFA added that it would communicate details of the new technical direction for the Black Stars in due course.
The decision comes shortly after Ghana’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Germany in Stuttgart on Monday 30th of March, 2026, adding to a string of shambolic outings for the Black Stars in recent international matches. Addo steered the team to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but had come under a barrage of criticisms over tactical setups and inconsistent performances in the build-up to the tournament.
The timing, just months before the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, leaves the Black Stars in a period of uncertainty as they prepare for one of Africa’s most anticipated campaigns in the expanded 48-team competition.
Addo, who previously served as interim coach and led Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, returned to the role in 2024. His tenure included both qualification successes and notable setbacks, including failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The GFA has not yet named a successor, though speculation has intensified around potential local and foreign candidates to stabilise the team ahead of the global showpiece.
