ACCRA – The Association of Rural Bankers has assured depositors of the safety of their funds following the dismantling of a notorious armed robbery gang that had been targeting rural banks across five regions.

President of the Association, Eric Appiah, said the police operation was a welcome relief but emphasised that rural banks remain vigilant to prevent further attacks.

“Our members are more vigilant. We have strengthened our surveillance systems, retrained our internal security, and are working closely with the police to ensure maximum safety for both staff and clients,” Appiah told Asaase Breakfast Show (25 September).

He explained that while armed robbers have attempted to overpower guards and access vaults, no customer deposits were lost in the recent spate of incidents.

“The public should continue to have confidence in us. Their deposits are safe, fully insured, and we remain committed to serving communities even in areas where other financial institutions may not want to go,” he assured.

Appiah also noted that the Association is intensifying training for staff and enhancing coordination with the Ghana Police Service to strengthen security in vulnerable areas.

His remarks follow the announcement by Inspector-General of Police, Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, that the syndicate was dismantled in operations across the Ashanti, Ahafo, Western, Central, and Eastern regions, leading to multiple arrests, recovery of weapons, and the seizure of stolen property.
