“Incoming chairman” – COKA gets Akufo-Addo’s nod to lead Ashanti NPP

KUMASI – Former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday (19 September) openly endorsed Odeneho Kwaku Appiah’s bid for the Ashanti Regional chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing him as the “incoming chairman.”

Akufo-Addo made the remark during the commissioning of a new NPP constituency office at Bantama in Kumasi, an event attended by senior party figures including former president John Agyekum Kufuor.

“And it is now time for other Kumasi, Ashanti MP’s and the incoming chairman, [Odeneho Kwaku Appiah] to do same,” Akufo-Addo said, drawing cheers from party faithful gathered at the event.

Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, is a long-serving NPP stalwart and a prominent figure within the Ashanti Region who has declared his intention to contest the party’s regional chairmanship.

Akufo-Addo’s public recognition is likely to boost his campaign ahead of the race.

The Bantama event, which also honoured past NPP leaders through the dedication of offices, provided a platform for both Akufo-Addo and Bantama MP Francis Asenso-Boakye to rally support for party unity.

Akufo-Addo repeated his criticism of President John Dramani Mahama’s government, calling its performance “abysmal,” while urging the NPP to campaign on its governance record under his administration and that of Kufuor.

The Ashanti Region, considered the NPP’s electoral stronghold, is expected to play a crucial role in the party’s 2028 comeback strategy, making the upcoming regional chairmanship contest highly significant.
