Former Black Stars defender Sam Johnson has thrown his support behind Benjamin Asare, urging that the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper be maintained as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers — as long as he maintains his current form.
Speaking in an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim (Gatusso) on Original TV, Johnson praised Asare’s recent performances and stressed the importance of consistency in team selection.
“Benjamin Asare is in top form right now. If he keeps it up, there’s no reason to change him. He should be Ghana’s No.1 for the qualifiers,” Johnson said.
Asare has impressed in recent domestic and international outings, earning praise from fans and pundits alike. With the Black Stars preparing for crucial qualifying matches, Johnson believes the technical team should build confidence by maintaining key players who are performing well.
“It’s not just about experience. Current form matters, especially at this level,” he added.
Ghana is set to face the Central African Republic and Comoros in the next round of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, and the decision on who guards the post could be crucial to the team’s success.
