Mahama rules out 2028 bid, pledges to uphold two-term limit

President John Dramani Mahama has assured that he will respect Ghana’s two-term limit and will not contest the 2028 elections.

He explained that stepping aside after his second term will give him the freedom to maintain strict fiscal discipline and avoid the cycle of election year overspending.

During bilateral talks with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on his three-day state visit, Mahama criticized the habit of governments loosening financial rules to win votes.

He said his administration has already achieved progress with falling inflation and interest rates, alongside a stronger cedi.

His comments counter opposition claims that he plans to seek a third term beyond his final mandate.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has also firmly stated that the party has no plans to present President John Dramani Mahama for a third term, emphasising the party’s full commitment to the dictates of Ghana’s constitution.

Responding to speculation around President Mahama’s political future and internal party succession plans, in an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday August 26, he reaffirmed the NDC’s respect for constitutional term limits and democratic governance.

“We have never run our party in ways that conflict with the national constitution, and we don’t intend to do that,” he said. “We will stick by the tenets of the Constitution.”
