Kukurantumi Police Station shut down, officers withdrawn after violent attack

The Ghana Police Service has temporarily closed the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all personnel following a violent attack by some residents of the town.

According to a statement issued by the Eastern Regional Police Command on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the decision was made on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police after a group of angry youth attacked the station and nearby barracks with stones, clubs, and other weapons.

The unrest was reportedly triggered by the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, also known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing. He was receiving treatment at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi at the time of his death.

Police say the attack occurred around 7:00 a.m. when the group attempted to set the police station on fire. A reinforcement team was quickly dispatched to the scene and managed to restore calm and order.

The Eastern Regional Police Command has since engaged the deceased’s family and local community leaders, assuring them of a thorough investigation. The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have begun separate inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.

Authorities also confirmed that video footage of the attack is being reviewed to identify those involved. The police have vowed to arrest and prosecute anyone found to have participated in the violence.

In the statement, Superintendent George Peprah Mills, Staff Officer of the Eastern Region, appealed to the public to use lawful means to resolve grievances rather than resorting to acts of violence.

“The Command would like to once again urge the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence,” the statement concluded.
