KOFORIDUA, EASTERN REGION Fifteen out of the twenty-three New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region have publicly declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The Members of Parliament who declared their support include Sammi Awuku, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Annor Dompreh, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, Charles Asuako Owiredu, Kingsley Agyemang, and Alexander Akwasi Acquah.

The remaining are Ida Adjoa Asiedu, Kwame Appiah Kodua, Duke Ofori-Atta, Michael Okyere Baafi, and Frank Asiedu Bekoe. The group also features Kwame Addo Frempong, Laurette Korkor Asante, and Alexander Agyare.

At an engagement in the region, the group, led by Achiase lawmaker Kingsley Ahenkorah Marfo, said their decision reflects their conviction that Dr Bawumia remains the most viable choice to lead the NPP to electoral victory.

Endorsement

Reading the caucus’ statement, Mr. Marfo said, “Our purpose is to endorse the candidature of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the flagbearership of the NPP for the 2028 elections. We are clear in our minds that Dr Bawumia is the best candidate to lead us to victory.

“Having been well marketed and having served as Ghana’s most impactful Vice President, he is the best option both politically and policy-wise.”

The MPs argued that Dr Bawumia embodies the qualities Ghanaians are looking for in their next leader. “He is humble, effective, and embraces all persons. We need a leader who unites and not one who divides,” Mr Marfo emphasized.

They further pointed to what they described as a vindication of Dr. Bawumia’s policy ideas in the wake of the 2024 elections.

According to them, despite what they termed as propaganda from opponents, the former Vice President’s proposals are increasingly gaining recognition among Ghanaians. “Changing him will be setting ourselves back by another 16 years,” Mr. Marfo added.

The MPs pledged to work tirelessly to consolidate support for Dr. Bawumia within the Eastern Region and across the country. “We have committed that we will work hard for him across the region and encourage all party members to be firm in their resolve to support his candidature,” the MP for Achiase further added.
