Parliament has suspended its proceedings in honour of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement.

Nana Konadu passed in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a brief illness.

She was 76 years old.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1982 to 2001 during the tenure of her husband, the late Jerry John Rawlings, was celebrated for her lifelong dedication to women’s empowerment and social welfare.

She played a key role in the passage of the Intestate Succession Law, which safeguarded inheritance rights for women, and championed education and skill development for children and women in rural communities.

Her passing has drawn emotional tributes from leaders across the political spectrum, including members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other parties, who hailed her as a trailblazer and a voice for the marginalised.

Parliament is expected to reconvene after a short period of mourning, with lawmakers likely to deliberate on an official motion to honour her memory.
